When it comes to purchasing your next car, it’s often easy to focus on getting the best brand for your buck. However, if you’re instead hoping to maximize value while still getting a smart, reliable ride, looking at the higher trims of a more affordable make is wise.
Take the 2021 Nissan Maxima and Infiniti Q50 for example. While the Infiniti is considered more of a luxury vehicle, it also carries a larger price tag with less frill — at least with the lower trims. Meanwhile, you can get a top-of-the-line 2021 Nissan Maxima for around the same price, but with all of the bells and whistles.
Nissan Maxima Platinum vs. Infiniti Q50: A Comparison
Don’t overlook the possibilities that a top-of-the-line trim like the Nissan Maxima Platinum has to offer. While it’s more expensive than the base model, the price often mirrors those of “luxury” brands like Infiniti while delivering more of the awesome features and technology we expect in modern cars.
With that in mind, let’s look at how the Nissan Maxima Platinum compares with some of the Infiniti Q50’s trims.
2021 Nissan Maxima Platinum vs. Infiniti Q50 Pure
This trip starts with the Infiniti Q50’s base model, the Pure.
The price is significantly lower, as the Pure starts at $36,600 MSRP while the Maxima Platinum starts at $41,840 MSRP. While that’s a considerable difference, it’s easy to see why the Platinum is worth the additional investment.
The only real similarity in terms of specs is the powertrain. The Platinum’s 3.5L V6 engine creates 300 horsepower, which is matched evenly by all three of the Q50 trims we’ll discuss. From there, though, the Platinum blows the Q50 Pure out of the water.
Safety features are plentiful with the Platinum, including must-have modern technology like blindside warning, front and rear parking sensors, and an Advanced Drive Assist Display. The Q50 Pure offers none of the aforementioned.
Heated leather seats? The Platinum’s got them, and the Pure wants them. An 11-speaker Bose sound system? Platinum 2, Pure 0. Superior gas mileage? More spacious interior? Memory driver seating? Check, check and check for the Platinum. You get the point.
2021 Nissan Maxima Platinum vs. Infiniti Q50 Luxe
The next level up from the Q50 Pure is the Q50 Luxe. This trim starts at $41,700 MSRP, which is just a sliver below the Platinum’s $41,840 MSRP. At this point, the difference in price is negligible.
Okay so what does the Luxe bring to the table that the Pure doesn’t? Not a lot, at least in terms of leveling the playing field with the Platinum. It’s still missing many of the safety features that come with the top-of-the-line Maxima model, doesn’t have a Bose sound system, and is still missing those wonderful heated leather seats.
The Luxe does add solid features like upgraded wheels, a textured aluminum interior trim and power sliding moonroof. That’s great, but it still falls well short of the schmorgesborg of extras included with the Platinum.
2021 Nissan Maxima Platinum vs. Infiniti Q50 Sensory
The other Q50 trim of note is the Sensory. For the most part, this is the Infiniti’s equivalent of the Maxima Platinum. There’s just one thing that must be called out: the Sensory will set you back $47,600 MSRP. That’s quite the price hike compared to the Platinum’s $41,840 MSRP. For that price, you could afford the 2021 Nissan Maxima Special Edition.
The Q50 Sensory boasts heated leather seats, a Bose sound system, sporty 19” aluminum-alloy wheels, enhanced ambient lighting, and a lane-departure warning system. Beyond that, there isn’t much else worth calling out with the Sensory. Doesn’t exactly sound worth the extra $6,000, does it?
If you’re looking for the perfect mix of value and advanced features, the 2021 Nissan Maxima Platinum is the only way to go.
